SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

‘‘The World We Want is one with positive energy. We want everyone to fuel their hopes with affordable and clean power. Why should we inhibit our productivity? Why should we limit our potential?’’

The World We Want

What does SDG 7 mean to us?

  • Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency (Target 7.3)

Baywind Energy Co-operative’s Ulverston site is the UK’s first community owned wind farm, with returns being generated for its 1,350 members. The co-op is able to generate further benefits to the local community through their community trust (BWECT), which provides information and grants for efficiency measures for homes and community organisations within the Furness area.

  • Increasing substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix (Target 7.2)

Cumbria’s coast is home to Walney Extension, the world’s largest wind farm. Located 19km off the coast of Barrow, Walney generates a total capacity of 659 MW, enough to power nearly 600,000 homes.
